A Sus2
12th Fret · A-Shape BarreMoveable A-shape sus2 rooted on A at fret 12 — index barres fret 12 from the A string up, ring and pinky add B and E at fret 14. Mute the low E. The open Asus2 shape moved up an octave.
Open A made easy
From the open A chord, lift your finger off the B string so it rings open. That open B is the 2nd that turns A into Asus2.
Hammer between A and Asus2
Strum Asus2, then drop a finger onto the B string at fret 2 to land on A major. This back-and-forth is everywhere in folk and rock rhythm playing.
Mute the low E
Open Asus2 starts from the A string. Let the side of your thumb or index finger keep the low E quiet.
Learn the moveable A-shape
The open Asus2 is the same shape as the moveable barre at fret 12. Slide that barre down for any other sus2 — for example fret 10 for Gsus2.
Let the open strings ring
Arch your fretting fingers so the open A, B, and high e strings all sound cleanly.
About the Asus2 Chord on Guitar
The Asus2 chord is built from three notes: A (the root), B (the major 2nd), and E (the perfect 5th). It is an A major triad with the 3rd suspended — the C# is replaced by the B a whole step above the root — so it sounds open, ringing, and neutral. Asus2 is one of the most-played suspended chords on guitar because the open shape (x-0-2-2-0-0) is just the open A chord with the B string left open, making the A → Asus2 hammer a staple of acoustic strumming. This page covers three voicings, from the familiar open Asus2 to a mid-neck top-string form and a moveable A-shape barre an octave up. Every diagram is interactive and playable with acoustic guitar sound.
