Tips for Playing the Dsus2 Chord

Open D made easy

From the open D chord, lift your ring finger off the high e string so it rings open. That open E is the 2nd that turns D into Dsus2.

Hammer between D and Dsus2

Strum Dsus2, then hammer your ring finger onto the high e at fret 2 to land on D major. This back-and-forth is everywhere in folk and rock rhythm playing.

Mute the bottom two strings

Open Dsus2 sounds best from the D string up. Mute the low E and A so the root D stays in the bass.

Learn the moveable A-shape

The x-5-7-7-5-5 barre form is fully moveable — slide it down two frets for Csus2 or up two for Esus2.

Keep the open strings clean

Arch your fretting fingers so the open D and high e strings ring clearly rather than getting muted.

About this tool

About the Dsus2 Chord on Guitar

The Dsus2 chord is built from three notes: D (the root), E (the major 2nd), and A (the perfect 5th). It is a D major triad with the 3rd suspended — the F# is replaced by the E a whole step above the root — so it sounds open, ringing, and neutral. Dsus2 is one of the most-played suspended chords on guitar because the open shape (x-x-0-2-3-0) is just the open D chord with the high e left open, making the D → Dsus2 hammer a staple of acoustic strumming. This page covers three voicings, from the familiar open Dsus2 to a fully moveable A-shape barre and a top-four-string form. Every diagram is interactive and playable with acoustic guitar sound.
