About the Fretboard Note Trainer
The Fretboard Note Trainer turns memorizing the guitar neck into a quick, repeatable game. Choose 'Find the note' to locate a named note on a given string, or 'Name the note' to identify a highlighted position. Four difficulty levels move you from the first five frets and natural notes up to all twelve notes across the full 24-fret neck. Every answer plays back with real sampled acoustic, electric, or classical guitar sound, and your accuracy and streak are tracked so you can measure progress. Switch between sharp and flat notation and any of 27 tunings, and flip on octave mode to see true scientific pitch (E2, A4) when you're ready to tell the same note apart across octaves. A timed challenge runs by default — keep the classic 60 seconds, choose 30, 90, or 120 seconds, set a custom length, or turn the timer off entirely for untimed practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Practice in short, frequent sessions. Start with the natural notes on the low E and A strings, then add strings one at a time. The Fretboard Note Trainer's Beginner level covers frets 0–5 with natural notes only, and the streak counter rewards consistent recall. As you improve, move to Intermediate and Advanced to cover all 12 notes up to the 12th fret, then Expert to drill the full 24-fret neck.
"Find the note" names a note and a string and asks you to tap the correct fret — great for building location recall. "Name the note" highlights a position on the fretboard and asks you to pick the note name from buttons — great for reading any position at a glance. On Expert difficulty, Find mode drops the string: you locate the note anywhere on the neck, every position counts, and the answer reveals all of them.

Yes. Turn on octave mode and every note shows its true scientific pitch — in standard tuning the open strings read E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4. The octave numbers are computed from the real pitch of each string and tuning, so they always match the sound you hear. In Find mode the octave then counts: finding E2 accepts only an E at that exact pitch, not every E on the neck. It is off by default, since plain note-name recognition is where most players start.
The trainer opens in timed mode by default: press Start and answer as many questions as you can before the clock runs out. The classic length is 60 seconds, but you can pick 30, 90, or 120 seconds, enter a custom time, or switch the timer off for untimed practice.
